On my last trip to Rome I made it my mission to find the best gelato. I walked around the city visiting all the top-rated gelaterias and many of the not-top-rated ones. In the process I ate lots and lots of gelato. Gelateria del Teatro, located in a hard-to-find alley near the Piazza Navona, was my favorite gelateria. Everything was made in the shop. The flavors were intense and refined. Its not as commercial as the popular Giolitti (which is very very good, but a complete scene and the servers are overworked and rude), and not as sterile and insipid as San Crispino which is a bit of an institution in Rome. Definitely try Gelateria del Teatro and Giolitti if you are ever there. For those of you who are curious, gelato is actually not the same as ice cream. Gelato is made with a greater proportion of whole milk to cream, so it contains about five to seven percent fat vs. ice cream’s 10%+. Additionally, gelato is churned at a slower speed, so it’s denser because not as much air is whipped into it. While ice cream is served frozen, gelato is typically stored and served at a slightly warmer temperature, so it has a softer consistency. Finally, gelato comes in much more interesting flavors like nutella, baccio, stracciatella, cream, pistachio, coconut, zabaglione. Yum.

I have had an amazing week visiting absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous places. Places that make you feel lucky to be alive. Places that feed your soul. The first stop on my trip was Whistler, British Columbia (Canada for those of you who didn’t know). Whistler may very well be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. And I doubt I’ll ever get tired of going back there. My first trip to Whistler was in January 1999. I didn’t want to go. At that point I didn’t like skiing because the only place I’d ever done it was Vermont. For me skiing in Vermont has always been like ice skating down a steep hill in zero degree weather. Not relaxing. Not enjoyable. At all. Whistler introduced me to skiing on SNOW. Down a MOUNTAIN. In 20 and 30 degree (COMFORTABLE) weather. Surrounded by FANTASTIC scenery. Making Vermont seem like an anthill. Since 1999 I’ve returned 3xs and would love to be able to visit every year. This photograph doesn’t do Whistler justice. Nothing does. You’ll just have to go there to experience it for yourself.

Peter Bjorn and John are a Swedish indie rock band, formed in Stockholm in 1999 and named after the first names of the band’s current members: Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson. They are best known for the 2006 single “Young Folks”, which featured Victoria Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes, and was a top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Their most recent hit, “It Don’t Move Me” is as catchy, but has a bit more attitude and is less, well, strange. It’s been floating around my brain tonight. Kazuki Takamatsu is a Japanese artist who mixes traditional and modern techniques. He uses gouache (hand painted, monochrome-based objects) and “Depth Map” (a technique where every pixel on the object is a shade of gray that is proportional to its distance from the object looking at it). These two techniques give a sense of surrealism and depth. Looking at his work is like looking at a silent scream or ghosts from some other dimension. It’s calming and chilling at the same time. Back in the late 1990s, Shonen Knife, Japanese girl band extraordinaire, made my favorite cover song ever. They took The Carpenter’s slow and folksy 1973 number one classic “Top of the World” and sped it up; popped it up; making it irresistibly jumpable.
