It’s actually going to happen. HBO is finally bringing George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” to television on April 17. And it looks as if it might actually be good. Yipee! “A Game of Thrones,” the first book in George R. R. Martin’s fantasy series, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” rocked my world when I first read it in 1997, proving you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Thrones is an awesome, unexpectedly rich story that twists and turns all over the place, constantly surprising and challenging readers to keep up. It’s truly one-of-a-kind and deserves to be made into an amazing television series. HBO seems to agree. It certainly has devoted a lot of time and energy to the series. The network acquired the rights to Martin’s books way back in 2006 and has been working on the series ever since, hiring such notable actors as Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey and shooting on location in Malta and Northern Ireland. According to Martin, HBO has remained very faithful to his books and previews look very promising. I’m very excited to watch the series unfold on April 17.

If I hadn’t been stuck on a long plane ride with nothing else to watch, I would never have given “The Big Bang Theory” a chance. Reason being, CBS does a very good job of making the show look painfully bad in promotional commercials. The premise of the show: two nerdy physicists share an apartment and an unlikely friendship with their “beautiful” neighbor with whom one of them is infatuated. There is a laugh track. The nerds are over-the-top, unrealistically nerdy. The neighbor is a blonde bimbo-looking waitress. Having watched the promos, there was nothing about the show that appealed to me (and I like sci-fi and geeky things). Yet despite the poor marketing, the show is laugh-out-loud, refreshingly funny. No matter how you spin it, it’s hard to do “The Big Bang Theory” justice, so I won’t even try. But it’s one of the only shows on big network television, other than “LOST” and “30 Rock”, that I enjoy. **A few days later… Watched an episode on TV last night and I liked it well enough, but the laugh track is super annoying.**

All hail 2009. The year when being a geek, or at the very least loving geeky things, became acceptable and mainstream… maybe even cool. It’s been a long, long time coming (*immense sigh of relief*). All hail J.J. Abrams the creator of LOST and Star Trek (2009). Thank you for daring to be different and thinking outside of the box just a little bit. The original Star Trek with William Shatner and its cast has always made me cringe, though I love The Next Generation, Voyager and even Enterprise (because of Porthos – Scott Bakula’s beagle – and the irascible blue Andorans with their cool antennae). So it’s really nice to now have a Star Trek movie based on the original series that I like and can identify with. And thank you, Chris Pine, for getting over your initial reluctance about taking the the part of Kirk. Oyaka!

“To Say Nothing of the Dog” by Connie Willis is the most brilliant book. Case in point: “It seems he’d been employed by a family who’d gone out to India, and he was unable to accompany them because of a sensitivity to curry.” A sensitivity to curry. Do you see what I mean???… Brilliant. I also really like Cole Rise’s photographs. Highly photoshopped, but ethereal and dreamy. Which is what I should be doing right now; being dreamy. I mean dreaming. I should be dreaming. But I’d like to be dreamy, too.

This is the first of a few video commentaries my friend Keith and I shot yesterday at the Quidditch World Cup at Middlebury College. It’s silly. Which begs the question, why am I so into this whole Quidditch World Cup thing? Well, first of all, I’m generally bored and underchallenged, and this is something that amuses me because it’s random and weird. Second of all, I like Harry Potter novels/movies. Third of all (third of all?), I think it’s cool that Muggle Quidditch was created in Vermont. Eva Sollberger I’m not. And I have a cold. But we had fun.

I am very much looking forward to the third annual Quidditch World Cup which will take place this Sunday, October 25th at Middlebury College. More than 20 teams from around the world will battle it out to see who will be this year’s Quidditch world champion. To see what it’s all about check out this CBS news clip. The event kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with a parade of teams. Games begin at 9:45 a.m., after an opening ceremony and speech by the Middlebury Grand Quidditch Patron. Admission is free and open to the public. If you can’t travel to the Middlebury campus, you can watch a live webcast of the World Cup on the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association website.
